A Bonus for Home Hill Primary School with its own Pool

HHSS Swimming pool opening May 1927 John Readford collection

WHILE a lot has been written recently about the lack of ability of young students in Australia to swim, the younger generation in Home Hill can be thankful for the thought and planning of the town’s pioneers (especially those associated with the Home Hill State Primary School) who built a swimming pool at the school almost a century ago.

Our photo shows the school pool after its construction in 1927 with the former dressing sheds at the eastern end.

Those sheds were destroyed in Cyclone Connie in the late 1950’s and were rebuilt in its current position.

Long-time residents will remember the “Threepenny Dips” that were held on weekends as fund raisers.
