TENNIS players from as far away as Brisbane and Mareeba in Queensland – and even New Zealand and Tasmania – were among the 44 teams of players that converged on the Home Hill Tennis Association courts complex over the May Day weekend for the Forty-Second annual Sugar Bowl tournament.
Many of the participating players use the weekend to catch up with friends who they only see once a year – and that is by being part of a team competing in the annual tournament.
Teams have a minimum of six players competing in each round of the tournament with some teams having up to 12 players – which results in over 300 players, together with families and supporters, converging on Home Hill for the popular event.
As she referred to the many successes over the three days of the tournament, Home Hill Association Secretary, Kate Casswell was particularly pleased with the “historic” event that took place during this year’s tournament involving the team titled “Teaspoons”.
Originally led by the late David Woods, the team has been competing since 1989 with minimal success – in fact, after being an entrant in every year’s competition since that year, they had success in winning “their first session” in the Sugar Bowl this year.
The team lost their original leader to cancer several years ago and is now led by another member of the Woods clan, Josh Woods, who ensures the team continues to compete while working around the tournament venue throughout the long weekend.
Mrs Casswell said the team were the “workers” of the tournament, but still competed for the enjoyment of the sport.
The announcement of the success brought strong applause from the crowd of players as the trophies were handed out.
