A LOVE of cooking has prompted a local resident to turn that love into a thriving business opportunity, as she moved to open Giovanna’s Cucina – offering a variety of Sicilian and Italian foods to add a new dimension to the businesses in the Home Hill Central Business District.
Giovanna Castorina has been interested in cooking “since I was six years old”, as she mainly followed in the footsteps of her Nunna, her father’s mother, who was of Sicilian heritage.
Married to Justin and with a three-year-old daughter, Ava, Giovanna started her cooking career from home, doing what she could while Ava was in Day Care.
She has now expanded to new premises at the 143 Eighth Avenue (at the corner of Tenth Street), which had been used in past years by her mother, Dr Narelle Martin, as a surgery, with opening times:
- Wednesdays 9am to 4pm
- Thursdays 9am to 7pm
- Fridays from 9am to 3pm
Giovanna also opens on one Sunday per month, depending on how the weeks fall.
She described her initial operations as “excellent”, with Lasagne being really popular with her customers.
She also supports local suppliers including butchers and the Bakery as well as obtaining produce from local farmers in season.
The business also carries other products in stock, such as spices to use in cooking, plants and candles, with everything being sourced locally.
